    Sweden’s deadliest school attack leaves 11 dead in Örebro shooting

    Eleven people were killed in a mass shooting on Tuesday at Campus Risbergska, an adult education center in Örebro, Sweden, approximately 200 kilometers west of Stockholm. Among the deceased is the suspected gunman, a 35-year-old male whose identity has not yet been disclosed. Authorities are investigating the attack, with no immediate information on the shooter’s motive. The shooting began shortly after 12:30 PM local time, prompting lockdowns and emergency evacuations within the campus.

    Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots before security officials and police arrived. A teacher at the school recounted how someone opened her classroom door and instructed her and her students to flee. They ran through the hallways amid panic as law enforcement secured the area. Authorities believe the gunman acted alone and have found no initial links to terrorism. The suspect had no prior criminal record and was reportedly licensed to own firearms.

    Investigators recovered an automatic firearm near his body, and forensic teams are analyzing the weapon as part of the ongoing inquiry. Several people sustained injuries, with multiple victims receiving medical attention at Örebro University Hospital. Some are undergoing surgery for gunshot wounds, and medical officials have reported that they remain in serious but stable condition. Emergency responders worked throughout the day to provide assistance and assess the full extent of casualties.

    Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson condemned the attack, describing it as “brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people.” He expressed deep sorrow over the incident and emphasized national unity in the wake of the tragedy. King Carl XVI Gustaf also extended his condolences, stating that he and his family were devastated by the news and acknowledged the efforts of emergency personnel. Campus Risbergska serves students over the age of 20, offering secondary education, Swedish language programs for immigrants, vocational training, and special education courses.

    The school operates within a larger educational complex that also includes institutions for younger students. The campus community remains in shock as authorities continue to provide support to those affected. While Sweden has seen an increase in gang-related violence in recent years, fatal attacks in educational institutions remain rare.
